The famous Piriquita establishment, with its yellow azulejo, situated right at the centre of old Sintra, is already around 150 years old. However, it was in the 1940s that Mrs. Luísa dos Santos Cunha, having trouble for lacking necessary ingredients for the production of sweets, was forced to investigate a recipe with more affordable ingredients. So that’s how the Travesseiros came about.
Today, the memory of its first recipe lies in a handwritten book from that time in the family’s possession. In fact, recipe books is something they have in no few number, Mr. Francisco Cunha told us.
The Travesseiros are very sought for by the Portuguese and the foreign clientele; everybody knows them. When was the last time you promenaded in Sintra and had one of those delicacies?
