The Guarda cake, like the cake from Miranda do Douro, is made of layers of bread dough, cinnamon, sugar and fat. In Miranda do Douro they use olive oil; in Guarda, the tradition is to use butter, so the cake is also called, among other names, butter cake. Another difference between these two sweets is that in Guarda, the cake is cut into squares and only then it goes to the oven. The squares become thus more crunchy. This sweet has been around for generations, particularly on festive occasions. But beware, for square by square you find yourself eating the whole cake.
