Famous since their first appearance in the late 1960s at Pastelaria Ramos, the cartuchos from Aveiro continue to be one of the city’s attractions. Outside Aveiro, everyone knows ovos-moles, but you should learn about the cartuchos too. The shop that sells them has since changed its name and it is now called Pastelaria Avenida. But the cartuchos remain the same: an outer dough based on sponge cake kneaded with chocolate, rolled into a cylinder and filled with ovos-moles, a square of sponge cake and whipped cream on top. The cylindrical shape and the fact that they have a filling were the inspiration for the name “cartucho” (cartridge), a term referring to paper packaging that were used in the past in grocery stores and other shops to wrap all kinds of things. You should stop by and try out the cartuchos.
