TURCOS

Toda a gente em Albergaria-a-Velha e arredores conhece os doces chamados turcos e a senhora Margarida Ferreira Coutinho, que ainda os faz. A receita destes biscoitos está na sua família desde os finais do séc. XIX, quando a sua avó, também Margarida, recebeu a receita de uma senhora de Aveiro, que tinha sido sua patroa no seu tempo de solteira. No período em que recebeu a receita, vivia dificuldades por ter ficado viúva, e esse bem que recebeu foi a maior ajuda que podia obter. A partir daí, gerou em Albergaria-a-Velha um negócio doceiro que perdura e que já vai na quarta geração. Quanto ao nome dos doces, foi o pai de Margarida Coutinho, cuja alcunha de família era “o turco”, quem deu finalmente um nome a estas pequenas delícias turcas.

Everybody in Albergaria-a-Velha and in neighbouring areas knows the sweet called “Turcos” (Turks) and Mrs. Margarida Ferreira Coutinho, who still makes them. The recipe for these cookies is in her family since the later years of the XIX century, when her grandmother, also Margarida, received the recipe of a lady from Aveiro, who had been her employer when she was a single woman. When she got the recipe, she was living with many difficulties because she had become a widow, so the valuable possession she received was the greatest help she could get. From there on, she generated in Albergaria-a-Velha a lasting and sweet business, which is now run by the fourth generation of the family. As to the name of the sweets, it was the father of Margarida Coutinho, whose family nickname was “the Turk”, who finally gave a name to these petite “Turkish” delights.
