It is believed that the idea of making “rabanadas” (identical to French toast) with red wine came about as a cheaper alternative to the use of milk. As to Ul bread (Ul is a small Portuguese village), it is very well-known among the people of this northern region and, as with many other recipes, the bread was here repurposed to become a sweet, thus avoiding leftovers. One can use red or white wine.
